UOP Benfield™ Process

The UOP Benfield process is a thermally- regenerated, closed-loop solvent process that uses an activated, corrosion-inhibited hot potassium carbonate solution to remove CO2, H2S and other acid gas components. The Benfield process can be tailored for either bulk or trace acid gas removal. It has most often been used in the following applications:

    • Synthesis gas treating for CO2 removal in ammonia plants
    • Synthesis gas treating for CO2 removal in direct iron ore reduction plants
    • Natural gas treating to achieve either LNG product or pipeline specifications
    • Recycle gas purification in an ethylene oxide facility

Typical feed conditions range between 1,000 and 12,000 kPa total pressure, with acid gas compositions of 5 percent to more than 35 percent by volume. The product specifications achievable depend on the application and can range from a few hundred ppmv to a few percent of CO2.

There are a variety of Benfield flow schemes available that permit process optimization and energy reduction with this near-isothermal unit operation. Existing plants can be revamped for capacity increases and/or heat savings through the use of UOP’s LoHeat™ technology and UOP high performance packing internals.

UOP Benfield Process – Conventional Flow Scheme

Benfield-Flow

UOP’s Benfield ACT-1™ activator is a promoter for the absorption of carbon dioxide (CO2) by hot potassium carbonate solution. ACT-1 activator can do one or more of the following in comparison with DEA activation:

    • Lowers the CO2 in product gas by 25 to 85 percent
    • Lowers the carbonate solvent solution circulation by 5 to 15 percent
    • Lower regeneration energy requirements by 5 to 15 percent
    • Increases feed gas throughput by 5 to 15 percent
    • Reduces the consumption of anti-foam and other chemicals
    • Reduces or eliminates the reduction of vanadium valence state from V+5 to inactive V+4 in ammonia or hydrogen purification service

Combining conversion from DEA activator to Benfield ACT-1 activator along with capital investment in LoHeat technology and high performance internals can results in even higher energy savings and capacity improvements than those noted above.

The Benfield process was introduced more than 35 years ago and more than 700 Benfield units are in commercial service worldwide.

UOP, through its affiliate UOP Limited and ExxonMobil Research and Engineering Company (EMRE), have finalized a technology licensing agreement with a subsidiary of Gazprom Neft under UOP and EMRE’s joint marketing alliance.

The new technology will enable Gazprom to improve its production of refined distillates at its subsidiary, the Moscow Oil Refinery plant. The refiner will combine UOP distillate Unionfining™ hydroprocessing solutions with EMRE’s distillate de-waxing technology to produce low-sulfur diesel. Pete Piotrowski, vice president and general manager of Process Technology and Equipment for UOP said, “The combined UOP and EMRE technology platform offers the Moscow Oil Refinery a single, integrated solution for its hydroprocessing and fuel de-waxing needs.”

“Together, UOP’s hydroprocessing solutions and EMRE’s distillate de-waxing technology will help Moscow Oil improve its high-quality, low-sulfur diesel refining capabilities,” said Vince Alberico, manager of Technology, Sales and Licensing for EMRE. The Moscow Oil Refinery Plant will install a hydroprocessing unit using UOP and EMRE technology as part of the plant’s modernization program. The project will integrate UOP distillate Unionfining technology with EMRE’s MIDWTM process for de-waxing diesel feedstocks. The addition of the hydrotreating unit will allow the refinery to produce fuel to meet more stringent Euro V emissions standards for motor vehicles. This agreement marks the first project in Russia to be launched under the joint EMRE-UOP alliance formed in 2012.

The UOP distillate Unionfining process improves the quality of kerosene, jet fuel and diesel to meet stringent fuel regulations. EMRE’s MIDW process is a selective catalytic de-waxing process that can improve yields of high-quality diesel with excellent cold flow properties.

UOP has been developing and licensing hydroprocessing solutions, including advanced catalysts and specialty equipment, for almost 100 years. As a major research and engineering organization, EMRE develops a broad spectrum of refining technologies to safely and reliably respond to an array of process challenges.

AnnivMarkOn Oct. 6, dozens of UOP customers joined President and CEO Rajeev Gautam and other UOP executives for an academic forum followed by dinner at Chicago’s famed Field Museum of Natural History. The event was in commemoration of UOP’s 100th year in business and included guests from major North American oil and gas companies.

At the forum, Rajeev described UOP’s role in building the oil and gas industry during the last century, and provided his view of how the oil and gas industry will grow in the next century. Joining Rajeev at the event was Pulitzer Prize-winning author and vice chairman of IHS Daniel Yergin, who spoke about global market dynamics in the oil and gas industry. Following Dr. Yergin was former ExxonMobil chairman and CEO Lee Raymond, who discussed the importance of investing in innovation. David Martindale, Senior Director – R&D, concluded the discussion with a review of new UOP technologies.

The gathering at the museum provided an opportunity to thank customers for their continued partnership – all in the shadow of Sue, the largest, most extensive and best preserved Tyrannosaurus rex specimen ever found.

“We were very happy to bring our message to customers in this way on the occasion of our 100th anniversary,” said Rajeev. “We were even more pleased that so many were able to join us at these events to tell us personally how much UOP means to their businesses.”

This was one of several similar events being held around the world during the UOP’s Centennial year.
